Robert B. Pickering, Ph.D., serves as Deputy Director of the Buffalo Bill Historical Center. In
1984, he received a Ph.D. in physical anthropology from Northwestern
University.
Dr. Pickering's professional career has combined anthropological research
with the broader educational goals of museums. He has developed exhibits
and programs for youth and adult audiences. Pickering has received
numerous grants for his research and educational activities. In 1994,
he was presented with a service award by the Institute of Forensic
Medicine in Bangkok, Thailand. The Native American Resource Group
of the Denver Museum of Natural History presented Dr. Pickering with the
Distinguished Patron Award in 1997. Dr. Pickering served as curator on
the Ancient Mummies exhibition at Denver Museum of Natural
History, which won the 1999 American Association of Museums (AAM)
11th annual exhibit competition in the "exhibit budget under $50,000"
category and the 1998 Silver Peak Award from the Denver Chapter of
the International Television Association for the documentary film, Mummies. Dr. Pickering's most recent books are The Use of Forensic
Anthropology, and Seeing the White Buffalo.
Current research interests include the study of bison/human interaction
and bison biology. In addition, Dr. Pickering's archaeological activities
include developing non-destructive techniques for determining authenticity
of ancient West Mexican ceramic figurines, the subject of his latest
article "The Ancient Ceramics of West Mexico," published
in American Scientist Magazine.
