Larom Summer Institute in Western American Studies

"Teaching the Humanities of the West: A Cultural Perspective"

July 14-18, 2008


TOPIC & INSTRUCTORS

This one week course (July 14-18, 2008) is designed for teachers looking to enhance their classroom experience for themselves and their students. Instructors teach the humanities of the West through museum collections, primary resources, online resources, and hands-on teaching techniques. This year’s Larom Summer Institute is designed to meet state identified standards and learning outcomes, while emphasizing enrichment practices that aid teachers and students in discovering and uncovering our western heritage. Internet access and e-mail are required. There are three (3) scheduled online lectures prior to the start of the course.

Team taught by: Michael Masterson, PhD, Northwest College, Powell, Wyo.; S. Renee Dechert, PhD, Northwest College. Powell, Wyo.; Carol Bryant, PhD, University of Wyoming; and several guest speakers.


ENROLLMENT

This course has limited enrollment, and seats fill up quickly. The Buffalo Bill Historical Center reserves the right to cancel and/or change a course.

TUITION

$537.00 for the one week course.


ACADEMIC CREDIT

Academic credit is given by the University of Wyoming. Continuing education credits are also available for Wyoming teachers through the Professional Standards Teaching Board.


SCHOLARSHIP

A few tuition and/or housing scholarships are available to those with a well-founded need. Information is available upon request.


LODGING

Students are responsible for their own lodging. A descriptive list of places to stay (motels, lodges, campgrounds, R.V. parks) is available upon request. Affordable housing can be secured, but reservations should be made early.

The Cody Country Chamber of Commerce is a useful resource.
