Man of the West, Man of the World: The Life and Legacy of William F. "Buffalo Bill" Cody

The pending reinstallation of the Buffalo Bill Museum—flagship of the Buffalo Bill Historical Center—offers an unparalleled opportunity to unmask the persona of Buffalo Bill and examine the life, times, and, above all, the essential humanity of William F. Cody, someone about whom so much, and yet so little, is known.

When it reopens in May 2012, visitors to the “new” Buffalo Bill Museum will still learn about that iconic figure whose larger-than-life statue stands outside the building. More importantly, however, they will encounter someone who, it turns out, lived a life that just about everyone can relate to and identify with—one marked by triumphs, tragedies, struggles, adversities and ambiguities. As they meet William F. Cody, a “Man of the West” who became a “Man of the World,” we hope our visitors also will learn something about themselves.
