What is a Powwow?
LEARN ABOUT POWWOW
DANCES and the HISTORY
OF POWWOWS
According to Emma Hansen, Curator of the Plains Indian Museum,
"This is an opportunity for Indian people to interpret
their own culture rather than having visitors becoming familiar
with Native cultures only through lecture-based learning.
Visitors are exposed to humanities-based learning themes such
as history, languages, ethnomusicology, as well as contemporary
issues."
A popular educational program is
the Powwow Learning Tipi. Gloria Goggles, Lakota educator
from Ethete, Wyoming, invites visitors to discover the traditions
of powwow. Younger visitors have the opportunity to try on
different types of powwow clothing and become familiar with
the various dances, as well as learning powwow etiquette.
