AMERICAN INDIAN SUMMER INTERNSHIP PROGRAM

The Buffalo Bill Historical Center offers numerous opportunities for qualified college or university applicants of American Indian heritage.

The American Indian Summer Internship Program is designed to provide students with a work experience that enables them to develop the knowledge and skills necessary to enter the museum profession and other related fields. Internships offer students hands-on involvement with the museum profession in a manner that cannot be duplicated in the classroom or through textbooks. Students gain work experience and practical knowledge that increases their employability in a professional workplace.

Students may be candidates for degrees in:

  • Art and art history
  • Natural history, ecology, environmental history, wildlife biology, geography, and geology
  • History, American studies, historical development of firearms
  • Plains Indian ethnology, anthropology, and Plains Indian culture
  • Library science

Students are placed in one of the Historical Center’s five museums, the McCracken Research Library, or in one of the Center’s departments such as:

  • Technology
  • Education
  • Collection Management
  • Registration
  • Photography
  • Journalism
  • Graphics

STIPENDS & HOUSING

Summer Apprenticeships are full time, paid positions during the summer months. A stipend of approximately $6.75 per hour is provided, based on a 40-hour workweek. Housing is the responsibility of the student. Availability of housing is somewhat limited in the summer months. Students are encouraged to make housing arrangements early in the spring. Most students have been able to locate housing at rental rates of $300-$500 per month, depending on the type of accommodations desired.

American Indian Summer Internships are generously provided by: The GE Fund.

JOB DESCRIPTIONS & RESPONSIBILITIES

Interns complete a special project, learn the general operations of the department, and are exposed to overall museum responsibilities. The direct supervisor assigns specific intern job responsibilities. Students are required to participate in orientation and continuing education sessions. Additional requirements for academic credit are variable and are established by the academic supervisor at the intern's college or university.
