Current Little Venus Fire

Basic Information

The lighting-caused Little Venus fire started on June 19, 2006 approximately 30 miles west of Meeteetse, Wyoming in the Washakie Wilderness of the Shoshone National Forest. The fire is now considred contained, and expected to remain so within the current perimeter.

This fire began in the Washakie Wilderness at about 9800 feet in isolated strings of pine and spruce trees, which had previously experienced significant beetle kill. Because of this prior infestation, management goals for the area indicate this fire should be allowed to burn.

To monitor the fire’s progress, the United States Forest Service installed a remote web camera in the area of the fire. You can see the images from this camera on the right hand side of this page. The web camera used satellite communications and solar power to send hourly images of the fire from the wilderness area.
