Making Space in Mormonism: The Story of Jane James, 19th Century Black Convert
The first in a series of lectures on religions in the American West. Free public lecture by Quincy D. Newell, Asst. Professor for Religious Studies at the University of Wyoming. Her presentation explores how Jane James, who became a Mormon in the 1840s, made a home for herself in the LDS Church despite her exclusion from important Church rituals. 7 p.m. Coe Auditorium. Behind the Scenes of How a Museum is Re-envisioned
It takes weeks, months and years when planning, designing and building a museum. The Buffalo Bill Museum, flagship of the BBHC, is scheduled to undergo its first significant modification in nearly three decades. Join museum curator, Dr. John C. Rumm, and curatorial assistant, Lynn Houze, for this insiders' look at how the BBM team is envisioning that reinstallation, and for an opportunity to offer your input. 1:30 - 3 p.m. Limited enrollment; pre-registration encouraged. Black and White Photographs and Negatives: Identification and Preservation
October is Archives Month, and we are offering a workshop focused on providing a general overview of basic black and white photographic processes, including daguerrotypes, tintypes, ambrotypes and glass plate, nitrate, and acetate negatives. We discuss how to identify most types of negatives and some of the types of prints. Basic preservation and housing principles that help keep collection material stable are discussed as well. Many examples are provided from the McCracken Research Library’s photographic collections. Participants are welcome to bring samples or questions from their personal collections. 10 a.m. - noon.
